RE: trailer hitch

When I was checking into putting a hitch on my 5er, I found that some of the hitch companies offer hitches for trailers. I didn't want to go that way, but it may work for you.

RE: Freeway or Secondary Fuel Stops!

Why burn $5 of fuel to attempt to save $3?
My thoughts exactly. Plus if I'm traveling with a fixed destination in time, I don't want to waste my time driving around when I can be on the road.

RE: Installing Power Outlet For RV

Paul, just curious...why 4 wires? . . .
Simplest answer is just look at the plug. It has four blades, each does something. Therefore 4 wires.

RE: Do extended warranties make sense?

Most financial gurus don't advise getting them. They are more like insurance policies than a true warranty.
Paying in is a certainty. Getting something back is pretty iffy. With all the usual deductibles, exclusions, etc., the chances of you soming out ahead are slim.

RE: 2008 Silverado Fiver Hitch Options

I have a 2008 HD with standard bed. A lot depends on the 5th wheel as well. The 5er comes pretty close to the cab turning tight going forward. I always use the slider when backing up.
If you are buying a new hitch, a manual slider option only adds about $100. Personally, I think it is well worth it.

RE: fifth wheel that can be pulled by 1/2 ton pickup

I'll just offer my personal experience. I have a 28 foot that I pulled with a 1500 Silverado similar to yours. I was 50 pounds over the rear axle rating. I upgraded to a 2500HD more for the power than the weight ratings.
So I would guess there are several 24 foot units that will do fine. And not all pin weights are grossly understated. My unit said the dry pin weight was 900 pounds. Fully loaded I come in at 1100.

RE: Remember about the height of your vehicle

For those who have your significant other help you park, be sure she/he sees this.
DW was helping me pull into a site one time and she was surprised when I ran into an overhanging branch. She thought I could see right above the cab. I explained that no, I couldn't, that's why she was on the outside of the truck.

RE: New GMC truck -- bed/trailer clearance

. . . At last resort, you could trade it for a Ford!!!!
I know you were joking, and I don't want to start a war, but isn't the Ford even higher? That was the impression we got when we test drove a Super Duty.

RE: Will diesel and gas flip-flop again?

From what I have been reading, I don't think so, at least in the short run.
The news says that demand for diesel on the world market is what is keeping it up, relative to gas. In recent years a lot of the cars built in Europe are diesel. I also read where that may change. If that happens, diesel may go down, but it will take several years.
(All of the above is only an opinion, so go easy of me, please.)

RE: State Parks and sewer hookups

I'm with the posters not in favor of sewer hook ups in state parks, at least not with the intent of encouraging people to stay longer. As Mister D said, it's already hard enough to get into a state park in Michigan without making it more convenient to stay longer.
Michigan has a 14 day maximum anyway. We can easily go a week if we are careful and conserve water usage. That usually means the campground shower and the toilets at least during the day.

RE: Camping while hitched up

I would also unplug the umbilical (but I don't know that this is necessary).
I unplug it and put it in an obvious location only to reming myself to put up the stabilizers.

RE: Replacing GM OEM hitch - what to get?

I don't think the problem applied to ALL GM hitches. If you would post the year and type of truck you have, I am sure others could tell you whether or not you have a problem hitch.

RE: Battery questions for dry camping for 4 days.

I'm no expert, but I think of the things you listed, the 2 hrs of televison would be a killer. Also, I think the group 24 and 27 refer more to the size of the battery casing than they do to capacity.
You need to look at the amp-hr rating. The more the better. And for what you want to do, you want a deep cycle battery, not a starting battery.

Storing RV at Michigan State Park Campground

Michigan has a new program this year. You can store your RV for up to two weeks at a state park campground for free. They are trying to entice people to camp multiple times up north without hauling your unit back and forth.
Has anyone tried it? Problems? Successes? We are looking at leaving our fifth wheel at Straits for two weeks.

RE: Camping in Michigan west side

The Lake Michigan campground mentioned by GizmosMom is too small for a 5th wheel (IMHO.) However just north of it is Breevort Campground, also in the Hiawatha National Forest. Just be sure you have the NFS one, not the one in the state forest.

RE: extension cord

A lot depends on how the post is wired. If it is wired so that each of the outlets is on its own circuit, you would have access to the full 30 amps.
If not, you would only have available what they others weren't using. For example, if you are all on one circuit, when the total of the 4 of you exceeded 30 amps, the circuit breaker would trip. You might have 8 - 10 amps available.
